Colour and Light

Without light people wouldn’t be here. It was after all ‘in the beginning’. The members, artists and artisans have tackled this subject which can be one of the most challenging aspects of making art. Emotions are often described in terms of colour; such as seeing red, feeling blue, green with envy; people feel a lightness of being, someone or something brings light or darkness to their lives, there’s no denying that colour and mood are inextricably linked. Colour theory can be an eye-opener into the world of art, not unlike music. There is harmony and mood in colour as in music and a ‘wrong’ note can change the whole experience. A corona of light around a man in Marie Cameron’s photo ‘Last Man Standing’ portrays strength, resilience, alone-ness and the beauty of a simple human figure. It shows how easily one can express a powerful statement with a touch of light. With the colour, warmth and vibrancy of the artworks in this exhibition, the artists have covered all aspects; light has shone through and given reflections, clouds, warmth and depth.

Dinner Under the Stars with Tom Dibb and Band

Tom Dibb is a UK based singer-songwriter who has been touring the world in his VW camper van “Pickle”, and in March 2017 he brings his music and van to Nimbin. Tom Dibb describes his #APickleDownunder tour as a challenge and experiment, he is driving Pickle across 27 countries in 27 weeks to arrive in Australia with a mission to spread the gospel of his music. Tom sings songs in the vein of Jack Johnson and John Butler, but with a distinctive alternate country edge. His recent single Hit the Road, recorded at Grand Chapel Studios, calls to mind another UK troubadour with itchy feet, Rory Macleod. Tom Dibb has definitely got his roots in country blues, but like Macleod, he has a trampish and raffish air and his travelling roadshow has all the flavours of the wide open road.

Zach's Ceremony

Q and A with filmmaker Alec Doomadgee. Somewhere between tribal tradition and city life, a young boy must learn what it takes to become a man and awaken the warrior within. Growing up isn’t easy, especially for Zach who is rapidly making the transition from boyhood to manhood, in both the modern world and his ancient culture. Pressures from his loving, but staunch father, the temptations of city life and the ever present spectre of racism all take their toll. Ultimately Zach must embrace the traditions and knowledge of his ancestors and awaken the warrior within. Zach’s Ceremony is an extraordinary, feature-length documentary captured over ten years that shows one boy’s journey to manhood in a complex, emotionally driven story. Its themes are universal: that of family and connection, but also explores the fascinating and unique question of what it means to be a modern man belonging to the oldest living culture on earth.

The Fencer

Hailed by audiences at festivals worldwide, Klaus Härö’s elegantly crafted, multi award-winning drama is set in post-war Europe, and movingly depicts the true story of fencing master Endel Nelis, who risked his life to give a group of children something to believe in. It’s 1953, and Endel (Märt Avandi) is on the run. With his war-time affiliations catching up with him, he eludes the secret police in Leningrad and flees to a remote village. There he tries to keep a low profile by taking a menial job in the sports department at the local school, but his efforts to give the students a proper physical education are quickly frustrated by a lack of resources. Bearing similar themes and emotional impact to Philippe Falardeau’s Monsieur Lazhar, this beautifully acted and stunningly-shot film is a deeply affecting and memorable story of compassion, sacrifice and bravery against the odds.

Doug Anthony All Stars in Near Death Experience

Run screaming down memory lane with the monster Gods of Australian comedy - the Doug Anthony All Stars. Death, Sex, Horror – the ingredients of great comedy. After sell out world tours in 2014-15, the Doug Anthony All Stars are back. In the '80s and '90s, they terrorised the world with their infamous live shows; provocative, psychologically manipulative, gleefully tasteless - D.A.A.S kicked political correctness out the door and gave it a damned good thrashing outside. In 2013 Paul McDermott and Tim Ferguson joined forces with their mentor Paul “Flacco” Livingston and began a massive run of sold out shows across Australia. This year, they returned in triumph to the Edinburgh Fringe and to London, picking up the “Spirit of the Fringe” award, and being voted in Chortles (UK) top ten comedy shows of 2016. Since their rebirth in 2013, DAAS have broken box-office records. Their musical comedy is more wicked than ever. Wracked by illness and age, their songs hit hard and fast.

Stimela the Musical

It would be tempting to describe Stimela as a South African version of Tap Dogs or even Lord of the Dance, and based solely on this recording, it wouldn't be that far off. The "gumboots" of the title refers to boots that South African mineworkers used to wear. Often adorned with bottle tops, they could also be used as percussive instruments as the workers performed a variety of dances. Most recently, they've been endorsed as a symbol of self-expression and liberation by the Stimela The Musical of Soweto. Although some of the songs are traditional, most of the material was written by Mthakathi Entertainment, the show's director, and Thapelo Motloung, and should appeal to fans of South African pop and of Ladysmith Black Mambazo and The Lion King.

Coranderrk: Ilbidjerri Theatre Co and Belvoir

Coranderrk is about what might have been. At a Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry in 1881, the men and women of the Coranderrk Aboriginal Reserve went head-to-head with the Aboriginal Protection Board. Their goal was both simple and revolutionary: to be allowed to continue the brilliant experiment in self-determination they had pioneered for themselves on the scrap of country left to them. Coranderrk recreates the Inquiry. This is both great theatre and great history. It revives the voices of all those, black and white, who fought for a better pact between the country’s oldest and newest inhabitants. This special production pays tribute to the resilience and adaptability of a people who rose to the challenge despite the odds, appropriating the power of the written word to make their own voices ring loud and clear. Coranderrk a collaboration between leading Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, researchers, education experts and community members. The production aims to encourage a shared understanding of the past between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.

Be Your Self Redux

Australian Dance Theatre has thrilled sellout audiences around the world with performances of cutting edge dance. Now the internationally acclaimed company brings Be Your Self Redux to NORPA for the first time. In Garry Stewart’s Be Your Self Redux, audiences are engaged in a complex dialogue in which they are compelled to explore what makes you ‘you’. The athletic dancers of ADT are transformed into erupting, powerful, and emotional entities, projecting startling physical images. Arising from conversations with a Buddhist monk, neurologist, physiologist and literary academic, Stewart situates the body at the centre of his inquiry and reveals that despite civilising cultural influences, the body is still a force to be reckoned with. A distilled version of the original Be Your Self, Be Your Self Redux fuses Stewart’s audacious choreography with spoken word to create an exciting dance work that leaves audiences questioning the underpinnings of who they are.

ACO Collective Concert

Britain’s leading clarinetist, Matthew Hunt, joins violinist Pekka Kuusisto and ACO Collective as the soloist for Brahms’ soulful Clarinet Quintet. Brahms came out of retirement to write the Clarinet Quintet after hearing Richard Mühlfeld play. Brahms modelled his quintet on Mozart’s, to create a work that is clearly written from the heart. The clarinet’s mellow and haunting sound suited Brahms’ musical temperament and it was perfect for expressing the autumnal mood of his later years. Bartók too was writing from his soul. But rather than stripping it bare, his Divertimento was a diversion from the pervasive gloom of his surroundings.

The Merchant Of Venice: Bell Shakespeare

Money makes the world go around. Portia has it. Bassanio wants it. Shylock lends it. Antonio owes the value of it. Love also plays a part. Portia offers it. Bassanio wants it. And Antonio may lose a pound of flesh for it. This uncompromising and dark production explores the tense relationship and prejudices between those that have, and those that don’t. Dark in its humour and bawdy in its romantic hijinks, The Merchant Of Venice takes audiences on a journey of love, mercy and justice. Featuring three time Helpmann Award winner, Mitchell Butel (Janet King and Rake) as the defiant Shylock, and Jessica Tovey (Wolf Creek and Wonderland) as Portia, the production will be directed by Anne-Louise Sarks (Belvoir’s Jasper Jones and Medea), this masterfully envisioned production tackles the prejudices and preconceived notions of one of Shakespeare’s most challenging plays.
