The Events

A mesmerising piece of playwriting: generous, compassionate and subtle - The Events was the sleeper hit of the 2013 Edinburgh Festival. For this Australian production, the brilliant Catherine McClements is joined by a host of community choirs in an extraordinary blend of theatre and music. Claire is a minister and the director of a choir that meets regularly in a local hall. It’s made up of all sorts, but when a disaffected young man enters the hall and opens fire with a semi-automatic, this community, and the ideals that formed it, are blown apart. After the event, Claire is left asking the big question: How do people live together knowing it can all come apart in a moment? The Events, in a co-production by the Actors Touring Company, the Young Vic Theatre, Brageteatret and Schauspielhaus Wien, was first performed at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, in August 2013.

Wildskin

Darkness exists in the underbelly of every community, and in characters they may have met – a darkness that dwells within everyone. Wildskin acknowledges that most people harbour secret longings for the wild; to escape into nature as a way of finding their true selves, to act upon their craziest impulses and secret desires in order to feel truly alive, to break out of the rut of the everyday in search of adventure. To let oneself go wild is to take a journey into the unknown — far away into the world, and deep into the soul. With an all female cast, Wildskin is a celebration of wildness by a bevy of seductively dark clowns through joyous explosions of song and dance — because to be wild at heart is to re-connect to the lost child that was so full of play and wonder. From the makers of NORPA hit shows Railway Wonderland and Dreamland comes this latest work.

Ian Moss

Respected as one of Australia’s iconic musicians, Ian Moss delivers an unforgettable sound – not only as a telling soloist on guitar but especially with his silken voice, ringing with clarity and resonating with pure soul. While primarily recognised as an axeman of tenacity and sweet melodic sensibility, Ian’s distinctive vocal is the essential signature of his soulful, bluesy muse – as it has been since his first tentative foray into music during the early 1970s. Born and raised in Alice Springs, Ian started playing guitar in local teenage bands but moved to Adelaide after failing one of his high school years, planning to repeat in the big city. Fate intervened when he answered an advertisement for a guitarist in a shop window in 1973, joining the band that was to become a legend in Australia and that made such an undeniable impact that they are now etched in the Australian music psyche forever. That band was Cold Chisel. 2018 will bring a new chapter in Ian’s career as he releases the new self-titled studio album, his sixth, and heads to regional Australia armed with his acoustic guitar and incredible songs.

Lismore Friendship Festival: Piazza in the Park

Their Piazza in the Park is an authentic, free, family friendly community event that encourages residents and visitors in Lismore to become Italian for the Day! The festival celebrates Lismore’s friendship relationship with Conegliano and Vittorio Veneto in Italy that was formed in 1991. It recognises the contribution made by Italian settlers who migrated to the district in the last century. The festival is growing in reputation both locally and outside the region. Held in Lismore's beautiful Spinks Park in the town centre, the 105 year old rotunda comes to life with the sounds of Domenico and The Latin Mafia. The inclusion of a dance floor this year had people up dancing all day. The outdoor riverside location is filled with music, food and wine and diverse activities with a distinctive Italian twist. Dress up in the Italian colours of the flag (green, white and red), book in to learn how to dance the Tarantella or a few words in Italian, savour the delights of Italian fare and meet up with family and friends on the day after Lismore’s iconic Lantern Parade - their 25th! Why not make a weekend of it? Lismore is a regional town worth a visit.
