Australian National Goanna Pulling Championships

The offbeat, all Australian sport of Goanna Pulling dates back to the nineteenth century. Contrary to the name, it's a test of strength between two people, whereby contestants get down on all fours and are linked by a leather belt over their heads, enabling them to pull backwards, tug of war style. Enter on the day for your chance to win cash prizes in the Men's and Ladies' Age and Weight Divisions. The Goanna Pulling Championship includes many other events on the day including wood chop, men's, ladies' and children's novelty races, dog obedience trials, tug of war teams, market stalls, and food and drinks. Making a fun filled experience for the whole family. Brooms Head Family Fun Day

December Weekend of Rowing

The Clarence River will come alive with boats, competitors and officials, when the river's two major rowing regattas are held at Memorial Park in Grafton. The Head of the Clarence River Regatta is expected to draw a large number of schools to compete. In the past crews have came from New Zealand, Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Gold Coast and, of course, the competitive Clarence Valley schools. On Sunday, the Grafton Rowing Club's annual regatta will be held, with the majority of teams staying over to compete, plus the addition of the North Coast's many master competitors.

Family Fun Day

Fun for young and all will be had at Rotary Club of Yamba's Annual Family Fun Day. Mr Steve Machel has become the resident expert Sandologist for the Family Fun Day sand modelling competition and offers contestants hints and tips before this popular event at Yamba's Main Beach. Come down to Main Beach early and watch his design take shape using nothing more than sand, water, bucket, a butter knife and brush. Teams of four then compete against each other in making their own sand modelling design. Cars, sea creatures, mythical animals, space creatures and the traditional sandcastles are seen each year. They have a junior section (under seven year olds) and a senior section (over seven) with trophies for the winning teams. Only natural items found on the beach can be used in the design and the use of normal beach bucket and spade is allowed to carry water and sand. No house hold garden equipment will be allowed. There is a barbecue sausage sizzle and steak burgers held by Rotary and the beach kiosk is always open. Entry fee is per team with all money going to Yamba Rotary for use on local projects.

Grafton Farmers Market

The Grafton Farmers Market continues to attract new stallholders while still maintaining its core of regulars. The market is held weekly on a Thursday, in the Christ Church Cathedral Op Shop Car Park on the corner of Duke and Fitzroy Streets. There is street parking available. Discover the flavoursome taste of seasonal fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs just harvested, much of it grown organically, chemical free and local, purchased directly from the grower. Enjoy the wonderful assortment of condiments in the way of fruity jams, pickles, olives, olive oils, honey, eggs, and home baked goods.

Grafton Jacaranda Festival

From the last weekend in October to the first weekend of November every year the longest running floral festival in Australia, the Grafton Jacaranda Festival, is held under canopies of purple blossoms. The festival commences regally with the crowning of their Jacaranda Queen and Princesses. Local arts, crafts and sporting groups take the week long opportunity to showcase their work. The city of Grafton comes to a standstill on Jacaranda Thursday with the main street lined with market stalls, rides and entertaining skits performed by local businesses. The mighty Clarence River is a spectacular backdrop for the Riverlight event on Friday evening where spectators line the riverbank to watch local performers before a fantastic finale of fireworks. The festival culminates with a float parade of enormous proportions on Saturday afternoon followed by a sunset family concert on the Riverbank. Sunday morning, for one last chance to tread the Jacaranda blossom carpeted streets, there is a Fun Run which includes a run across the famous bendy bridge.

Grafton July Racing Carnival

The Clarence River Jockey Club, located in the picturesque jacaranda tree lined city of Grafton on the NSW North Coast, is home to the richest non-metropolitan carnival in Australia, the famous Grafton July Racing Carnival. The Club provides amenities equal to metropolitan tracks to cater for the July Carnival attracting crowds in excess of 30,000. Grafton to Inverell Cycle Classic

This one day event, beginning in Grafton passing through Glen Innes and finishing in Inverell, is a 228 kilometre ride over some of the most demanding terrain in worldwide cycling, starting at 25 metres above sea level and climbing to 1060 metres, then finishing in Inverell at 590 metres. The race is six to seven hours long, depending on weather conditions. The Grafton to Inverell Cycle Classic is one of the main events throughout the year in world cycling. Each year at the finish line in Vivian Street, Inverell where various street activities are held. Why not bring the family along and enjoy the carnival atmosphere.

Maclean Highland Gathering

Grab your kilt and get to Maclean, the 'Scottish Town in Australia'. Walk among the clans that invade the town for the Highland Gathering every Easter from around the country. Piping competitions take place non-stop at different venues, as well as street concerts with dancers, pipers and singers. A parade along the main street of all participating bands takes place on Easter Saturday (8.30am sharp) and is followed by traditional Scottish games and dancing - tossing the Caber and hammer throwing, food stalls and Scottish products await the bands and visitors at the Showgrounds before a Grand Scottish Concert at the Civic Hall.

Tim The Bream Yamba Fishing Classic

Yamba's famous annual 'Tim the Bream' national fishing titles will return to Ford Park Yamba NSW and the Clarence River in August with a prize pool of over AUD30,000. The featured prized catch for catching tagged 'Tim The Bream' is worth a whopping AUD20,000 with another 10 tagged fish having a value of AUD1000 each. There will be prizes for the heaviest Yellow Fin Bream, Flathead, Luderick, Jew Fish (or Mulloway), Trevally and Whiting in a catch, weigh and release competition. The main weekend event , held by Yamba Rotary, is at Ford Park Yamba with daily prizes for biggest catch of the day. Bring your Yellow Fin Bream, Flathead, Luderick, Mangrove Jack, Jew Fish, Trevally and Whiting for weigh in. There will also be prizes for the most fish weighed, smallest and strangest fish caught over the weekend.
