Suggested itineraries - The Clarence Valley

DAY 1

The morning

Take in the historic walking tour of Grafton’s Heritage buildings and tree lined streets with the Grafton Regional Art Gallery being a highlight. Don’t miss the Jacaranda Festival (1st week November each year) if you’re holidaying around this time.

For lunch

There are a variety of options in Grafton from the Piccolo Café & Restaurant at the Grafton Regional Art Gallery, Grafton’s award winning Toast Espresso Café, charming country restaurants and riverside Aussie hotels on the banks of the Clarence River.

The afternoon

Visit Schaeffer House Historical Society Museum in Grafton and take a short scenic drive north along the Clarence River, taking in the chain vehicle ferries at Lawrence or Ulmarra.

If you’re into the water, there is deep sea diving or snorkelling in the Solitary Islands Marine Park.   Visit the 19th Century historic listed river port and antique and vintage shops of Ulmarra and the locally made arts and craft gallery and visitor information at Ferry Park.

Surf the legendary point break at Angourie Surf Reserve or swim in the Green and Blue Pools at Angourie.

For dinner

Discover Yamba’s famous Eat Streets of Coldstream and Clarence Streets and try the famous Yamba prawns and fresh local seafood. The award-winning Yamba Shores Tavern on the Clarence River often has entertainment and you can dine looking over the Clarence River. Back in Yamba, the Block Bar Café at Yamba YHA offers a diverse selection.

Take in the live entertainment at the many hotels and clubs in Yamba or a twilight stroll on the banks of the Clarence River to admire stunning sunsets.

Stay the night

There is a wide selection of caravan and camping parks, Yamba YHA backpacker hostel and accommodation from 3 star to luxury.

DAY 2

The morning

Take to the water with a scenic river cruise on the Clarence River or step back in time and visit the Yamba Museum and historical Hill and Flat Walks. There are surf schools and kayak tours, deep sea or river fishing tours and the option to play a round of golf on a country course with the kangaroos.

For lunch

Pacific Hotel, Yamba affords sweeping views of the ocean and coastline, together with International cuisine and the street cafés of Yamba or the riverside venues along Maclean’s high street.

The afternoon

Tour of Maclean’s Scottish heritage, find your Clan’s tartan, Scottish Cairn and spectacular lookout over the Clarence Valley. There are art galleries in Maclean and a locally made arts and craft gallery.

For nature lovers, head to the Iluka World Heritage listed rainforest walk and up to Iluka Bluff lookout which is a perfect land based whale watching spot from July to November. This was is 2.5 km one way.
