Old Glenn Innes Road – Scenic Drive
Old Glenn Innes Road, Grafton, Glenn Innes
Head west on the Gwydir Highway from South Grafton for 7km and take the left-hand turn onto the Old Glenn Innes Road. Follow this sealed road for 40km until it turns to gravel at the locality of Buccurumbi.
Cross the bridge at the junction of the Nymboida and Boyd Rivers. 7km from the bridge is the remains of an old graveyard, worth a look for history buffs.
The old township of Dalmorton was the heart of an abandoned gold mining area that once supported 5,000 inhabitants and 13 pubs! The remains of the old butcher’s shop can still be seen as well as many abandoned gold mine shafts dating back to the 1860’s.
8km further on is the unique historic tunnel bored through solid rock. Continue through spectacular scenic farmlands to the locality of Newton Boyd at the base of the Great Dividing Range.
The Mann River Nature Reserve is a great spot for picnics and swimming with toilets, tables and fire places. The road ascends the range onto a sealed section past the settlement of Wytaliba. At the top of the range, turn west towards Glenn Innes.
