Harrington – Crowdy Head – Camden Haven – Scenic Drive
Ten minutes north of Taree, just off the highway to another world, is the tranquil seaside villages of Harrington and Crowdy Head. If you love fresh oysters and seafood, make sure you stop at Stones Oysters just before you cross the first bridge going into Harrington. Harrington sits at the northern mouth of the Manning River and offers a taste of holidays from our past. Discover the seaside town and enjoy a walk along the breakwall that was built in 1894 to protect the entry channel for shipping. It now serves as a scenic walk and great fishing location with pelicans waiting for the fisherman each day at the back of the Harrington Hotel.
The adjacent Pilot Hill Lookout provides expansive views over the river delta and the graves on the hill bear witness to the pilots whose task was to guide the boats over the bar. Close by, over 50 ships foundered between 1824 and 1941 and three wrecks still lie under the sand today.
Just a five minute drive north of Harrington, the small fishing village of Crowdy Head retains evidence of its European settlement and history around the area with a strong maritime flavour. A must do for all is a visit to the iconic Crowdy Head Lighthouse. The lighthouse perched high on the headland provides 360-degree views of the coast looking south to Forster and North to Port Macquarie. Between May and November, keep your eye out for passing humpback whales. The lighthouse itself is picturesque and a great place for a photograph, easily accessible on a sealed road and Crowdy Head Beach just down the hill past the fishing boats offers great swimming.
Heading back to Harrington, turn left onto the gravel road and follow the signs through Crowdy Bay National Park to Diamond Head. The National Park has beautiful wildflower displays during spring. There is camping available at Crowdy Bay, Diamond Head and Kylies Beach and see National Parks in the Manning for more details. This road will take you through to Camden Haven which offers a wealth of possibilities for another day!Add to my itinerary
