Port Stephens

Port Stephens

Port Stephens is a series of idyllic seaside villages scattered along the Pacific Ocean and a crystal clear waterway, an easy two and a half hour drive north of Sydney. White sandy beaches and many attractive bays and inlets ring the shores of this estuary. Tomaree National Park boasts an abundance of walking trails and there are breathtaking views from the bluffs of Tomaree (161m) and Yacaaba (219m) that guard the entrance to the harbour.

Port Stephens is best known for its resident population of over 140 bottlenose dolphins. The best way to see the pods of these playful creatures is on one of the many cruises that depart Nelson Bay daily, all year round. Between late May and July approximately 3,500 whales migrate north to the tropics and return between September and November. Seeing these awesome mammals as they perform their graceful acrobatic displays is one of nature’s most breathtaking sights.

Activities in Port Stephens aren’t only limited to the water. Stockton Beach and the massive associated sand dunes form the largest coastal dune system in Australia and provide the perfect backdrop for an endless array of activities. Take a 4WD tour along the bight where you can learn about the history and flora and or conquer the dunes on a quad bike or sand board.

The untouched Tomaree National Park provides excellent opportunities for bushwalking and walking along the tree lined banks of the Tilligerry Creek, almost certainly guarantees a koala sighting.
