Arakoon National Park

The heritage-listed Trial Bay Gaol (1886) is in this park. Wander through the museum, explore the ruins or relax on the beach. Take a stroll over Monument Hill to the Little Bay picnic area, or enjoy the spectacular half-day walk to historic Smoky Cape Lighthouse. Hat Head National Park

A rich coastal environment with superb views from Hat Head and Smoky Cape. Historic Smoky Cape Lighthouse offers tours and accommodation in the assistant lighthouse-keeper’s cottages. Captain Cook Lookout has wheelchair access, and there’s a picnic area at Smoky Cape. It’s a great place to spot whales. Car-based and camper-trailer camping are available at Smoky Beach and also at Hungry Gate camping area south of Hat Head. Join a guide for a special insight on one of our Discovery tours.

Reservoir Lookout, Crescent Head

Reservoir Lookout is located on the south eastern side of Crescent Head with views south over Goolawah National Park and Regional Park plus the headlands further south in Limeburners Creek National Park. With expansive views of the ocean from this lookout, the whales remain in sight for longer, making this an ideal place to admire the giants of the sea.

South West Rocks

The waters off South West Rocks are a temporary home for migrating whales and their calves, and there are sightings of humpback whales and southern right whales to be enjoyed. Boat cruises are available during the whale watching season with local dive operators from April to November on request.

The Gap, Hat Head

The Gap is a beach located between Hat Hill and the northern end of Connors Track. Park at The Gap and relax in your vehicle while watching the whales go by, or take a hike to the top of Hat Hill to the north with views over South Smoky Beach and Smoky Cape Lighthouse. Otherwise hike south to O’Connors Hill for a bird’s eye view.
